Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online.Off-roading is a term for driving a specialized vehicle on unpaved roads, such as sand, gravel, riverbeds, mud, snow, rocks, and other natural terrain. These terrains can sometimes only be traveled by vehicles designed specifically for off-road driving (such as heavy-duty trucks and equipment, SUVs, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, mountain bicycles) or vehicles that have extra ground clearance, sturdy tires, and in some cases, front and rear locking differential. Examples of vehicle manufacturers notable for producing types of off-road vehicle (ORV) include AM General, Land Rover, and Jeep, although most vehicle manufacturers have some sort of off-road vehicle in their current range. These are usually rather expensive cars, but there are exceptions, like the Citroën 2CV, which is actually a budget car (for farmers). Trucks are often fitted with these extras by default. Furthermore, the military usually design their vehicles with off-roading in mind, such as a Jeep or HMMWV, or buy them from off-road manufacturers, such as Land Rover, which has produced cars for the armed forces of many countries.
The Citroën 2CV (French: deux chevaux vapeur, literally "two steam horses", from the tax horsepower rating) was an economy car produced by the French automaker Citroën from 1949 to 1990. It was technologically advanced and innovative, but with extremely utilitarian and deceptively simple Bauhaus inspired bodywork, that belied the sheer quality of its underlying engineering. It was designed to move the French peasantry on from horses and carts. It is considered one of Citroën's most iconic cars. In 1953 'Autocar' in a technical review of the car wrote of, "...the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, which is undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford." It was described in the book Drive On!: A Social History of the Motor Car by longtime CAR magazine columnist the late LJK Setright as "the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car."
Perhaps the most charismatic of French marques, Citroën was established in 1919 by the brilliant André Citroën. In 1934 Citroën introduced the Traction Avant model, one of the most famous designs in automobile history. In 1948, on a similar theme, the two-cylinder 2CV appeared, a much-loved model with a distinctive roll-back roof; it was built until 1990. Then there were the elegant DS, the luxurious Maserati-engined SM and the acclaimed XM. This edition brings the story up to date with the popular Xsara saloon, the Picasso compact multi-purpose vehicle and the commodious and comfortable C5.
